Georges Braque, French, (1882-1963)

Following his early training at a local art school in Le Havre, Braque moved to Paris and studied at the Academie Humbert and the Ecole de Beaux Arts. Early works by Braque were in the style of early impressionism and greatly influenced by Derain, Matisse, and Maurice de Vlamink. During his Fauve period (1906-07) Braque showed his interest in architectronic solidity of composition and an emphasis on strongly defined volume rather than brushwork and color. About this time Braque met Picasso and while they studied the late works of Cezanne, they both saw a new geometrization of form, and new spatial relationships that were to become the basis of cubism. Within three years Picasso and Braque invented Analytic Cubism.
