Introduction, One Moon One Heart
The book gives me huge pleasure! It’s readers will be entertained and the humour and wit of the original fables, and of Hou Yimin’s paintings, will enrich the lives of quite a few! I am so happy to have been involved in this splendid project!

What a splendid book! It’s really stunning! Excellent production too. I have no doubt that Lu Zheng and Hou Yimin are thrilled. And I love John’s translations. They are really lively. Congratulations.

I couldn’t wait to go through the new book. These are familiar fables from my childhood years when I thought I understood them. But not until I accumulated more experience in life did I understand the depth of them. Mr. Hou and you are to be congratulated. Using the Moon as a metaphor to thread through the realm of history, culture, and the art world indeed reflects his depth. I sincerely wish this book will spring the interest of learning Chinese culture for readers of all ages.

One Moon One Heart is a visually gorgeous volume, inside and out, and a thoroughly engaging one in its content as well. I love the juxtaposition of the textual and visual, as well as the old and the new. It is refreshing to see a book of this quality that neither ignores traditional culture nor seals it off in museum-case isolation from the present. You put past and present in lively, witty dialog with each other in ways that bring new life to both, and make for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.
I offer you my hearty congratulations on the achievement!

This book is a wonderful compilation. First, the choice of texts is great, with a preference for Zhuangzi and other classical works replete with offbeat wisdom and irony. The translations are not especially beautiful, but are apt. The casual, ironic tone of the English matches well the tone in the original. It's also well-suited to a general audience. The same can be said of the paintings. They are straightforward, even literal, in relation to the text, so that even children could grasp their point. I'm not an expert on calligraphy, but for my money, the calligraphy is beautiful in an uncompromising way--not pretty, but rugged and original, like many of the texts quoted. Altogether it's a remarkable collection that introduces some of the finest passages in classical literature to a general, English speaking audience. Unlike those classroom compilations we often find--stuffed with the most abstruse and boring passages in classical literature--this collection consists of anecdotes that convey some of the most profound thoughts of the classical writers. Many thanks for introducing me to this fine book!

One Moon One Heart is such a beautiful book and such a wonderful collection of tales and paintings. Thank you for introducing me and my family here in the U.K. to the art and writing of Hou Yimin and Liu Zheng. I am interested in the folk art and folk tales of Asia so I appreciate this book very much. Wishing you much success with One Moon One Heart.
